FLAT FUNICULAR ROOF
A change from the grey roofs of concrete, the red brick flat funicular roof is an alternative roofing method adopted by us. The circular patterns formed are aesthetically pleasing and the technique reduces the use of steel and concrete.
The flat funicular roof works on the tight interlocking of the bricks in a particular ring. Many such concentric rings form the roof. A levelling screed concrete may be used above the brick surface to achieve an even floor surface.
One can lay the bricks over a flat formwork as with conventional RCC roofs. The bricks are laid at an angle in concentric circles starting and the outer most layer and moving inwards. Cement mortar between the bricks can be replaced with small stones as well.
The funicular roof can be employed in grids upto 3 metres by 3 metres. Larger roofs may have to be sub-divided into smaller square sections to roof them using this method.
